5th Grade Guest Speakers - Sons of the Revolution
Jan 29 2026 — Last week, our 5th-grade historians took a giant leap back in time as they welcomed guest speakers from the Sons of the Revolution, Dan Ginter, Roger Buterbaugh, Donna Buterbaugh, and Norm Blankenbeckler. This special visit was the perfect "bridge" for our past Project-Based Learning (PBL) unit on Colonial Williamsburg, moving students from the daily life of a colonist to the high-stakes tension of the early Revolutionary War.
The presenters, many dressed in authentic 18th-century period clothing, transformed the classroom into a living history museum. They shared gripping stories of the "spark" that ignited the revolution, focusing on the shifting loyalties in Virginia and the events—like the Intolerable Acts and the growing calls for independence heard in the taverns of Williamsburg—that forced colonists to choose a side.
The highlight of the visit was the trunk, a collection of replicas and historical items that allowed students to touch and feel the reality of the 1770s.
