Strategic Literacy Intervention

At McBride, the Strategic Literacy Interventionist (SLI) team is committed to helping students close the gap in literacy achievement. By third grade, students shift from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” Those who are not reading on grade level by this point are more likely to face academic challenges in later grades.

To address this, our Literacy Interventionists Ms. Burton and Ms. Turk work closely with classroom teachers to identify students’ literacy needs and determine the most effective intervention strategies. These strategies are implemented both within the classroom and in small group settings.

The SLI team provides targeted instruction in small groups that are specifically designed to address each student’s academic concerns. Importantly, these small group sessions are scheduled so they do not interfere with core instruction—ensuring that students continue to receive their full classroom learning experience.

Reading on grade level is essential for academic success. This added layer of support, combined with core classroom interventions, helps bridge the gap and empowers students to achieve grade-level reading and writing skills.
